To create the sound source data for Clavinovas, we didn't use just any piano; we used Yamaha's finest concert grand, the CFIIIS. And not just any CFIIIS — we carefully selected the "perfect" model, then had a master piano tuner painstakingly tune and regulate it.
We then used our Pure CF Sampling technology to accurately sample all of its sounds. We also kept post-sampling processing to a minimum. So when you play a Clavinova, you enjoy the same natural tonal response as you’d hear from our superb concert grand piano. Enjoy dynamic bass response, warm mid-range and clear high register for the ultimate digital piano experience.

When you play a grand piano, you can vary not only the volume of sound, but also the expressiveness: lively, gentle, and so on. Thanks to AWM Dynamic Stereo Sampling, you get the same response from a Clavinova. This is achieved by sampling sounds at more than 10 different levels of keystroke strength. From these, three to five levels are carefully selected, depending on the model chosen, to offer more detailed tonal variations. As you play, the Clavinova reproduces subtle differences in nuance according to your touch, ranging from pianissimo to fortissimo.

If you have played a grand piano, you probably know that the way you play it creates a variety of sounds. For example, the sounds that keys make when they are released and the complex harmonics and sound variations created when the damper pedal is pressed and raised. Clavinovas combine samples that have captured these nuances to express delicate sound changes and gradations, resulting in an incredibly realistic grand piano sound.
Key-Off Samples :
Provide the subtle variations of sound heard when you lift your fingers from the keyboard.
Stereo Sustain Samples :
Provide the resonances of strings and soundboard when the damper pedal is pressed.
String Resonance :
Provides the rich tones created when a hammer strikes a string and it resonates with other strings.
Half-Damper Effect :
Provides the sound that results when the damper pedal is pressed halfway down.

Yamaha's goal for our Clavinovas is to recreate the sound of a grand piano as closely as possible. One way we do this is by the length of the samples. When you play a grand piano, the time from the beginning of a sound until it gradually fades and ends is extremely long, and this helps to create its deep, rich sound. Clavinovas achieve the same type of beautiful, lingering tones by using extra-long sound samples — samples recorded until just before the sound fully disappears.

iAFC is a Yamaha acoustic system that allows the Clavinova to express the full-bodied sound of a grand piano. It accurately reproduces the string resonances that occur when the damper pedal is pressed and other resonances. It can even calibrate itself automatically to match the acoustics of the room you are playing in. iAFC can be selected at any time, offering a range of different effects that can be changed to match your requirements.

Spatial Effect :
Provides stereo sound with a feeling of depth. In addition to the normal sound output, it processes the sound picked up by an internal microphone and emits it from a rear speaker.
Dynamic Damper Effect :
Provides the string resonances that occur when the damper pedal of a grand piano is pressed. It processes the internal sound without using a microphone to create a more expansive sound.

The Tri-amp System is a unique system developed with advanced technologies that were refined in Yamaha audio products. It is a uncompromising method in which dedicated amps drive three speakers in the three independent sound ranges. Moreover, it is fine-tuned to take maximum advantage of the good qualities of Pure CF Sampling. With even delicate sound nuances clear and distinct, it achieves truly natural sound.
