A grand piano keyboard has 88 keys. Its playable sound range is broad, so a single piano covers everything from the lowest of an orchestra's sounds, the contrabass, to the highest, the piccolo. But the most important factor is the balance of the 88 sounds. No matter how beautiful each note is, if the sounds are not balanced when they are played, the piano will not provide highly expressive musical qualities. This is the reason why Clavinova uses Pure CF Sampling,* which delivers piano sounds created by tuning one carefully selected CFIIIS, Yamaha's finest full concert grand piano, to the optimum condition and then sampling all the sounds from this single piano.

The role of a keyboard is to communicate the feelings and thoughts of the performer through touch, without any change, to the hammers that strike the keys, creating richly expressive sound. Therefore, for the Clavinova keyboard, we wanted the natural touch of a grand piano. Of course, a superior piano is not created simply by providing it with a grand piano-like keyboard and sound. What's most important is matching the feel of the playing touch with the expression of the sound. Only when these match, can a keyboard play sounds that come directly from the fingertips of the performer. Using sensitivity techniques developed through the process of creating pianos by incorporating the opinions of many people who play them, Yamaha succeeds in breathing life into the touch of the Clavinova.
Clavinovas provide numerous benefits only possible for an electronic piano. They do not need to be tuned, so they always produce correct sounds. Their volume can be raised and lowered and they can be played using headphones. And of course their size makes them convenient to position in a room.
CLP models come with 50 internally stored piano pieces and even a collection of printed scores. You can practice by playing the keyboard as you listen to a song, or just listen to them as model performances. With the Clavinova lesson functions, your lessons will progress quickly.
You can have the Clavinova play the left hand part while you concentrate on the right hand part, or vice versa. This lets you to practice one hand with awareness of the sound and rhythm when both hands are played.
You can freely adjust the tempo while maintaining the same pitch. This lets you can begin at a gentle speed, avoiding mistakes.
